Adam Lambert: too ‘gay’ for America?

American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert has managed to upstage Madonna and upset America with his latest performance – including a gay kiss and some crotch-caressing hanky-panky.

During his three minute appearance at the American Music Awards this week Lambert managed simulating oral sex with a male dancer and a full on lip lock with his (male) keyboardist.

A victory for gay visibility? – or just a tacky gay stereotype? The jury’s out. Regardless, the performance has racked up enormous media interest following 1, 500 complaints from viewers.

It was the singer’s first post idol live performance to promote the release of his debut album ‘For Your Entertainment’ – presales of which has guaranteed the number one spot for Lambert this week.

Controversy followed the 27 year old star the morning after the show when a scheduled follow-up appearance on Good Morning America was subsequently cancelled.

“Given his controversial American Music Awards performance, we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning.” Producers said.

The cancellation annoyed fans and gay activists who claim the ABC network had no problem airing Madonna’s 2003 VMA performance which featured a three-way kiss with Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears.

In an interview with CNN Lambert claimed the sexual content had not been rehearsed and occurred in the heat of the moment. However he feels there’s a double standard within the entertainment industry.

“Women performers have been pushing the envelope sexually for the past 20 years and all of a sudden a male does it and everybody goes, ‘Oh, we can’t show that on TV’. To me that’s a form of discrimination and it’s a double standard, and that’s too bad.”

This week the biggest event is that two planets are moving hand in hand into Aquarius, the Venus and the Sun. The Sun in Aquarius will set the tone for a whole month and Venus for about 225 days. The Sun as the center of consciousness and life giving entity for our planet can be seen as one of the male planetary principles. Venus on the other hand is the goddess of love and harmony, rules relationships and defines how open we are in our hearts and what we are looking for in love. A conjunction between Sun and Venus is always depicting the yin and yang balance between the forces and the need to come to some form of equilibrium between the two.

Aquarius might be a sign of personal freedom but still is an individual looking for a place within the context of a relationship, a group or society. For relationship matters this is a month to have a fresh look into the balance between autonomy and intimacy in your relationship and maybe ask yourself some questions.

Do you have the balance between autonomy, freedom and intimacy you like to have in your relationship? Or do you feel stifled or suffocated? Can you talk about and share your visions of life and specifically about your needs in your love relation? What are you willing to commit to? Maybe you like to do something spontaneous together, take a weekend off and have a little honeymoon somewhere?

If you have planets in Aquarius in your personal chart you can expect them to be more activated this month and pushing into the foreground. You might be willing to take more risks and receive sudden inspiration or insight. Let us have a deeper look at the particularities of Aquarius and how we can support ourselves with the birthstone Aquamarine.

The Age of Aquarius

Aquarius is a masculine air sign ruled by Uranus and belongs to the 11th House—Friends & Vision.

If you’ve heard the song from the musical Hair—“This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius”—you know that Aquarians are such original thinkers and nonconformists that they can change the world. They are not interested in how things have always been, but how they can reshape the world. They always have their eye on the future, not on the past. The cultural revolution of the 1960s and 70s epitomized the Aquarian need to rebel against the established order and bring forth a new vision.

A Sign of Change

Aquarians have a rich personality—a mixture of many traits—that can be hard to pin down, making them unpredictable. And that’s how they prefer it as they are always open to new ideas and new ways of being—as long as they initiate those changes themselves. They need the freedom to express their individuality. Their original way of thinking allows Aquarians to see solutions to problems that others don’t see. They pursue goals and challenges with great determination, but they have the flexibility to change course in midstream when they see a new solution or a better way of doing things.

Aquarius is a highly sociable sign. Aquarians are very likeable, quite interesting, and great communicators. Many people are drawn to those qualities of Aquarians, and they tend to have a great many friends and associates and to join a lot of clubs and groups. Because of their need for individuality and freedom, and their mental approach to life, they can appear to be somewhat emotionally distant in relationships. Aquamarine: An Aquarian Stone[1]

The Aquamarine is one of the true birthstones of Aquarius. It is found around the world, with the most important sources in Brazil and Madagascar. It crystallizes in a long six-sided prism. Its name derives from the Latin for “water of the ocean” because of its color, which may be light blue, medium blue, or blue-green. The most expensive and desirable color is the darkest blue.

Uranus infuses Aquamarine with some unusual qualities and a vision beyond our

usual limited mind-set, making Aquamarine the rebel among the gems. This is the gemstone of visionaries fighting for a better life, supporting goodness and necessary changes. It urges us to seek freedom and independence and to express our uniqueness. Aquamarine is the stone of innovators, ahead of their time in many ways. It encourages us to always question our limiting beliefs with an open mind and to be willing to grow beyond them. It can help us to find our own vision and purpose in life and the courage to live them.

This unique gem connects us with the unlimited aspect of being that is found in the ocean, symbolizing the vastness of existence, the unlimited space and horizon that we experience standing on a beach or on a boat.

Aquamarine also has a female aspect, represented by the Moon. The Moon symbolizes our unconscious mind, our emotions, and our past memories. It reflects our emotional needs and wants, our ability to give and receive. Through its female aspect, Aquamarine supports and nourishes us, as if with mother’s milk. Feeling full and nurtured, we are able to share from the abundance of our own heart.

Aquamarine also sharpens our mind and our powers of discernment and helps us tap into the collective unconscious mind with all its creative resources. In so doing it helps us develop our intuitive creativity and objective knowledge.

Aquamarine opens and balances the throat chakra, which helps us to express our personal truth, including our true feelings. The throat chakra is an area where we all have many blocks; thus we often feel limited in our self-expression.

Iron gives Aquamarine its color and energizing element. It is said to help remediate iron deficiency. With its high energy level Aquamarine restores equilibrium in over energized people who are impatient, always rushing about, overstressed, and tense. Those individuals may be at high risk of accidents!

Aquamarine also represents Mother Mary. When we strip away two thousand years of male Christian tradition, we discover that Mary was not only the mother of Christ but a strong and highly evolved being in her own right and thus a role model for us today. Her strength also relates to the tradition of the Black Madonna that is found all over the world. The Black Madonna stands for the destructive and creative female principle of the universe, called Shakti in the East Indian tradition.

Thus versatile Aquamarine represents the qualities of freedom, growth, moving beyond limitations, a sharp mind, creativity, self-expression, and balance. Drawing on these qualities, Aquamarine helps women to grow into a new dimension of their womanhood and helps men to balance their own inner woman. Rebecca Grant’s popularity has just skyrocketed. The glamour model just appeared in a studio cut during the NFL gameon FOX where she explained to Verizon subscribers how to watch football on their phones.

The Verizon Football Girl has been passionate about sports since childhood.
She began living her dream by hosting a Buffalo Bills NFL game in her hometown.
She then joined ESPN and Fox Sports World to host a variety of sporting events including skiing and soccer. A brief stint on the Game Show Network fueled her modeling career. In 2000, she joined NFL Under The Helmet as co-host.

She’s known for her smouldering shoots in magazines for men such as
Maxim and FHM. She has also hosted the the
shows Truck Stop and Robot Wars: Extreme Warriors. She also has credits for appearances in She Spies and Third Watch.

She was born in Buffalo, New York in 1968.

On her MySpace page she lists her heroes as environmentalists, surgeons, animal rescue workers, housewives, anyone who can eat anything they want, Ghandi, Princess Diana, Jimi Hendrix, Madonna, and Martin Luther King Jr.

Here is an excerpt from an interview with extratv:

She says, “I just always had a passion for football. I just loved it! To me the ideal Sunday is sitting on the couch watching all the games.”

Rebecca’s managed to turn that passion into reality, hosting on Fox’s “Under the Helmet.” She says, “It’s a very hip, fun football show. During summer we get to hang out with football players, see them in their life besides the field.”

Her own life revolved around sports. She says, “I grew up in Buffalo. It’s a big sports town. There’s not much to do except watch football or hockey. I didn’t have any brothers, all girl family. So that was quite an adventure.”

The adventures never stopped once she moved to Los Angeles. She says, “I relocated out here after working for the Buffalo Bills. I worked with Madonna. I’ve doubled for her, also did some stand in work for her.”

From music videos to her newest gig with battling robots, it’s a game show from the UK called, “Robot Wars” on TNN. She says, “Not much difference between robotiers and football players. No, there’s some similarities that’s for sure. They both they go into combat and they do their best.

Rebecca has done her best to fast track her career, but this sex symbol does draw the line. She says, “I couldn’t ever do Playboy.”

Hot jocks, show-tune renditions of Madonna numbers and a guest appearance by Olivia Newton John – performing ‘Physical’ – can Glee get any gayer?

Oh yes it can!

Producers of the hit American musical comedy drama (try saying that after a couple of Singapore Slings!) are on a mission to out-gay gay staples Ugly Betty & American Housewives for season two.

Glama-gay misfit Kurt (Chris Colfer) gets a starring role…and a boyfriend.

Glee creator, Ryan Murphy told Entertainment Weekly: “We just announced we’re doing a nationwide search for the season two cast, and [a love interest for Kurt is] one of the three roles that we’re adding. And we’re going to make them a power couple.

“We’re not going to do the whole hiding in the shadows thing. We’re going to make them popular, and out and proud and glamorous. Like prom king and king. We’re doing the opposite of what’s been done.”

The Fox series which revolves around a group of all-singing high-kicking high school geeks (and a rather fabulous mash up of R&B and modern rock classics) is currently being showered with awards in the US.

Murphy also revealed that Grease star Olivia Newton John has agreed to duet her 80’s smash ‘Physical’ with ball-busting cheerleader coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) before the current season ends. A show entirely devoted to Madonna numbers has also been filmed.

Currently on a mid-season break the concluding episodes of Glee series one commence on April 13th in the US.

Meanwhile, fans of the show are currently being entertained with the numerous Glee tribute videos clogging up the internet – fans reinterpreting the show’s fabulous dance routines.

The Hope for Haiti concert that was aired on Jan. 22nd assembled some of the biggest entertainers in the world. Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Clint Eastwood, Madonna, U2, Taylor Swift and the list goes on. Millions of dollars were raised to help the people of Haiti who are literally struggling to survive after the large earthquake that has devastated their homeland.

Teen superstar Taylor Swift performed the song ‘Breathless’ which was written by the group Better Than Ezra. I thought musically her performance was pretty good and the arrangement of the song came off quite good. There has been rumblings though that she was a bit out of place being in this concert. It did not seem to me that she knew exactly what was happening here.

First of all, the short dress she wore was probably slightly distasteful considering the setting. She should have probably opted for something much more conservative like the other performers. Now granted, it was nothing extremely revealing but considering the circumstances she should have worn something much more low key.

I also did not like the repeated glances at the camera. This was not something that was supposed to showcase her and I think she got a little wrapped up in it and tried to put on too much of a show. None of the other artists repeatedly looked into the camera like this and did not try to draw any attention to themselves. Madonna put on a spectacular performance and was the model of class.

Now, I am not trying to pick on her because I think she is a very talented artist. Maybe she was not prepared properly for an event such as this. Hopefully when she matures a little, she will realize that things like this are for a much bigger cause than showcasing herself.

I Love Touring Italy – Springtime In Abruzzi

The small region of Abruzzi of central Italy lies on the Adriatic Sea. It’s quite traditional and is a fine place to see the “real” Italy. In this region early spring is likely to be fairly chilly, and late spring can resemble summer. March 19 is the Festa di San Giuseppe’s (Saint Joseph’s Day), which is celebrated in many parts of Italy including Abruzzi. The village of Rocca Pia, home to about 200 people, holds a religious ceremony complete with a traditional meal of beans and pork rind. In the small town of Fara San Martino, population 1600, the focus is on a huge bonfire. The little village of Civitella Alfedena, population some 300, lies in the heart of the beautiful Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise that covers three regions and englobes some two dozen municipalities. On March 26 it holds an Exhibition of arts and popular traditions.

On the first Thursday in May the village of Cocullo, home to about 300, hosts a Snake Handlers’ Procession in which a statue of St. Dominic, the town’s patron, covered with live serpents is carried through the town. Thousands of people follow this solemn procession through the village, accompanied by a band. Some people have come for the snakes and others for the fireworks and subsequent banquet. There is even a breakfast at the foot of the hill.

The city of Pratola Peligna, population some 8 thousand, hosts The Festival of the Madonna della Libera in early May. This festival involves literally thousands of people, especially on the weekends. The streets are specially lit and brass bands play all day. Food specialties include hot porchetta and warm roasted peanuts. Major highlights include the welcoming of pilgrims who walk 42 km from the small town of Gioia de Marsi and the procession of La Madonna’s statue from the church through the town’s historic streets. On Saturday night there is a quite spectacular fireworks display.

The last Sunday in May the small town of Rocca di Mezzo, population 1500, holds a daffodil festival attracting thousands of people who have come to greet the spring. Saturday night the wagons are festooned with thousands of daffodils. Sunday afternoon they parade through the town. Unlike many other Abruzzi festivals this one is not rooted in time immemorial. It was started in 1947 by soldiers returning from World War.

The medieval town of Loreto Aprutino, population about 7,500, hosts the Festa di San Zopito to honor their patron saint on the Monday after Pentecost, for example on May 24, 2010. Please note, because the Easter calendar is complicated, this festival may be in summer, for example on June 12, 2011. According to tradition, in 1711 the remains of the Christian martyr Zopito were in transport from the catacombs of San Callisto in Rome. A farmer tending his fields failed to stop working and pay his respects to the passing procession. But his white ox genuflected in front of the statue of the saint and the urn. The villagers were really impressed and since then every year a white ox is trained to kneel and gets 40 days off from working in the fields. A young child dressed as an angel, holding a red carnation in his mouth and sporting a lace umbrella, sits atop the adorned ox as it wends its way through the medieval streets stopping and genuflecting at every church.

Madonna or Monroe piercing – This piercing is done on one side of the upper lip, giving the look of an artificial beauty mark.

Medusa piercing – This form of lip piercing is done just in the middle abode the upper lip, where the upper lip forms the curve in the middle.

Madonna in the Rose Bower

In 1473, the date on the back of the picture, Martin Schongauer painted for the church of St Martin at Colmar one of the most famous pictures of the German School, the Madonna in the Rose Bower. Crowned by two angels and holding the Child, the Virgin is seated in front of a hedge in which are interlaced wild roses or dog roses and garden roses bearing both flowers and buds. Peony buds appear among them. In the hedge birds are fluttering.

This theme comes from the same literary sources as the Paradise Garden (page 31). Among the flowers to which the Virgin was compared in the middle Ages, the rose, which in Antiquity had been singled out for honor as an attribute of Venus, was considered the most appropriate symbol of Mary along with the lily. Secular poetry seized hold of this image of the rose, which St Bernard was the first to attribute to Mary. In about 1235 the poet Gautier de Coincy composed a pastoral in honor of the Virgin. Having gone out riding in the fields in the early morning, he there happens upon a flower:

The hedge or grove of roses made its appearance in French art at the beginning of the fifteenth century. It is found, in fact, for the first time in a piece of Parisian goldsmith’s work known as ‘The little Horse of Alt-Otting,’ which had been given to the French king, Charles VI, by Queen Isabella of Bavaria in 1404. The king does not seem to have appreciated this present very much, for in July 1405 he gave it as a security to his brother-in-law, the Duke of Bavaria, who took it away with him in 1413. It was presented to the church of Alt-Otting at the beginning of the sixteenth century. At the top of a staircase, before which stands the king’s horse caparisoned with roses, the Virgin sits beneath an arched trellis of oak branches and roses; the king himself, crowned with roses, kneels before her; he is flanked by St Catherine, St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist, represented as children. The theme of the rose hedge appears in Germany shortly afterwards, in a picture of the Virgin offering a rose to the Child Jesus (Solothurn Museum). Stephan Lochner, in his famous Virgin in the Walraff-Richartz-Museum at Cologne, turned the hedge into an arched trellis, and Schongauer came back to the hedge. Italy too was to make the acquaintance of this theme, and one of the Florentine artists, Pier Francesco Fiorentino, made a speciality of it.

In Germany it is also linked with the legend of the Rose Garden of Worms. Planted on an island in the Rhine, by the beautiful Kriemhild, daughter of King Kibich, this fabulous garden, a league long and half a league wide, had in the midst of it a lime tree, under which five hundred noble ladies could shelter, and it was filled with dazzling roses. Other rose garden legends cropped up in Germany in imitation of the Worms garden, and in them the rose was often associated with the nightingale, as it is in Arabic poetry. In the end, on the model of these imaginary rose gardens, real ones were planted. The legend became mingled with the establishment of the Meistergesang in the fourteenth century: each of the twelve masters who were supposed to have founded it had received in charge a rose garden, the symbol of his poetry.

Why we loved them: A Warren Beatty biographer may have recently revealed that the star has bedded almost 13,000 women (that’s quite a few notches) but, for us, it‘s his relationship with cute British actress Julie Christie that was the best. The pretty boy Bonnie & Clyde star met Christie – whom he described as “the most beautiful person I’d ever known” – in 1965 before going on to sizzle with her on-screen in the films McCabe & Mrs Miller, Shampoo and Heaven Can Wait. For seven years they were one of Hollywood’s most glamorous couples.

If you’re a shift worker then lack of sleep is definitely a problem. Most shift workers suffer from some kind of shift work sleep disorder because of the erratic hours that we are required to work.

But how much sleep is enough? The standard advice that I hear from specialists is that there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ – it’s what’s right for you. So when people like Madonna say they can get by on four hours sleep, (is she a shift worker too?!) – then it certainly is possible, but it’s not desirable.

Now for those fortunate souls that work “normal hours” – i.e., 9-5 – the vast majority of these people get 7-8 hours sleep which is certainly going to help restore their bodies after a hard day at work.

Incidentally though, latest research is nudging towards 9 hours sleep as optimum! So if you’re like Madonna and you think you’re doing pretty well on 4-5 hours, it’s time for a rethink.

Four Simple Lessons that you can learn from a baby!

1. Babies need a lot of sleep - and so do most adults, whether they like it or not. But are you shaking your head and thinking that you’d love to sleep more, but you keep waking up in the middle of the night? Well for the record, stress is the number one reason for short-term sleep problems such as frequent middle-of-the-night waking and insomnia. So if this is you, then you need to find a way to resolve this stress in some way.

2. Babies are good at recognising what’s keeping them awake - but most grown ups aren’t. So without resolving things like stress, you will never get enough sleep.

3. Babies need a restful routine, like a warm bath and a bedtime story before bed - and so do adults! Grown-ups who are drinking, partying, emailing, watching TV, chatting with their mates on the phone or in other ways keeping their brains active could well be too stimulated to sleep. What we all should be doing is having a relaxing 10 minutes in the tub prior to tucking ourselves into bed with a good book.

4. Babies sleep best in a dark room - and so do adults. We evolved as a species to sleep in almost total darkness. Even a small amount of brightness can be strong enough to enter our retina even when our eyes are closed. This then sends a signal to the brain that upsets the internal clock … ahh … the wonderful world of shiftwork!

So if you’re trying to sleep during the day, or when somebody else has the lights on in the house – make sure that absolutely no light can enter your room.

This even includes the light from your digital alarm clock so make that this is turned off too! (OK, so you might need to set another type of alarm clock so that you don’t sleep in …) And of course, don’t fall asleep with the TV on, and use blackout curtains if you have to sleep during the day or if your streetlights are particularly bright.

So try and learn to apply some of these simple tips that you would have learnt (and forgotten) as a baby. Because your sleep and ultimately your health – depends on it.
