When You book a nice apartment in Positano Apartment in Positano – Amalfi Coast, with us You’ll realize  how beautiful and magic this town is.

The Cathedral of Ravello, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta was built at the end of the century: it is a derivation of the Benedictine basilica with three naves-Cassino, marked by a double colonnade, raised transept to the presence of an underlying crypt and apses extrados. The bronze door donated by the noble Ravello Sergio Muscettola, was made by Barisan from Trani in 1179, as is evident from the dedication. It consists of two wooden doors on which are posted in almost 80 mirror tiles, including 54 figures and 26 decorative. The joints are covered with ornamental bands connected by circular pyramid studs secured to the structure with large nails.

The technique used in the production of the panels is the basrelief, half way between the east and the highrelief engraving of the Roman West: the molten bronze was poured into sand molds and plaster where it was shaped in the manner desired. In the iconographic cycle are represented, from the lower registers, animal and plant (the tree of life, a subject of Mesopotamian origin) the human universe (represented by the archers and the dealers) and the hierarchy of the Church (Saints, Madonna and Christ). The epistle ambo was subcontracted by the second bishop of the diocese Rogadeo Constantine (1094-1150). The decoration consists of two side staircases flanked a central lettorino laying up the severed head of an eagle. In the lower two parapets are decorated with disks of porphyry and serpentine, framed by meandering curved, cosmic wheels that recall the creative action of the Word.

Above a mosaic depicting the biblical story of the prophet Jonah, swallowed by a sea monster and threw up, foreshadowing the death and resurrection of Jesus Under the lettorino to underline the character of a monument to the resurrection, two peacocks, a symbol of eternal life, overcoming a central niche, which refers to the empty tomb. The pulpit by Nicola di Bartolomeo da Foggia, was donated in 1272 by Nicola Rufolo. The decoration consists of a ramp and a square box. A trefoil arch, in which plumes are shown in profile and his wife Nicola Rufolo Sigilgaida, is the entrance to the staircase. The case is based on six twisted columns, supported by three lions and three female lions with thick manes. The capitals, meticulous work, are carved with animal motifs and plant shoots.

At the center stands the lettorino consists of a ‘eagle bearing in its claws a code with the inscription: “In the beginning erat Verbum,” beginning of the Gospel of St. John. Apulian artist probably came alongside a local shop, which was given the responsibility to execute the mosaic decoration, made of multicolored tiles laid on a bad lime. Curvilinear bands, consisting of six and eight-pointed star, framed animals, dragons and birds among flowering foliage set against a golden background. At the center of the counter facing the prospect depicting the Madonna and Child flanked by the coat of arms Rufolo. The main chapel dedicated to the city’s patron saint, San Pantaleone, was built in the seventeenth century to give a worthy place in the blood by the holy relic, preserved until then to the left of the main altar in a place called “window”. At a nice little dome stands the fine polychrome marble altar frontal. Four columns, entablature surmounted by, nor on the façade. In the center you can admire the painting of the martyrdom of Saint Pantaleone, work performed in 1638 by the Genoese painter Girolamo Imperiali, who also ply side with St. Thomas and Barbara. The relic of the blood, kept in a reliquary of silver gilt, soles melt on the anniversary of martyrdom. (July 27).

World Bazaars

I love world bazaars. Souks, suqs, markets. Call them what you will, they’re just so much fun to prowl in. By definition bazaars are shopping quarters… especially in the middle east. They were probably the precursors to our flea markets, shopping malls, and supermarkets all rolled into one. The word seems to have originated in Persia, but now you find bazaars all over the world.
